Zirconia Coating and Coupling-agent Treatment for Steel Cutting Disc

Cutting high-strength, tough steel places heavy stress on both the abrasive grains and the resin bond. To improve durability, Dome treats the alumina abrasive grains with a zirconia-based coating, followed by a silane coupling-agent treatment.

The coated grains are calcined at approximately 930°C, allowing the zirconium precursor to form a stable surface layer while removing residual organic and volatile matter from the coating system. This treatment improves wear resistance and helps reduce premature grain loss, supporting longer wheel life.

After cooling, the grains are treated with a silane coupling agent and dried at 110–120°C. The silane strengthens the bond between the abrasive grains and the phenolic resin, helping the abrasive cut off wheels for steel retain its strength and deliver consistent performance during storage in humid conditions.

Dome’s reinforecd stainless steel cutting discs adjust the binder ratio to slightly soften the disc’s hardness, allowing the abrasive grains to continuously form new cutting edges. This enhanced self-sharpening capability effectively mitigates heat damage during the cutting of stainless steel. Additionally, because stainless steel contains chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni), its surface is more prone to contamination; therefore, we use a cutting formulation with low iron (Fe), sulfur (S), and chlorine (Cl) content specifically for stainless steel, in order to ensure that the workpiece is not damaged while

Yes, Dome offers multi-purpose cutting discs that can cut both steel and stainless steel. But we recommend using cutting discs specifically designed for stainless steel to prevent contamination of the workpiece.

What are Best practices for Using an Angle Grinder with a Steel Cutting Disc

The user must wear safety goggles and a face shield, as well as heavy-duty gloves. Ensure that the maximum speed of the steel cutting disc exceeds the rotational speed of the angle grinder. During installation, check that the cutting disc for steel is securely fastened to the angle grinder with the flange. When cutting, keep the cutting disc perpendicular (at a 90-degree angle) to the workpiece.
