How to Choose the Right Abrasive Grain

It has high microhardness, high toughness, and low price, making it the first choice for grinding high tensile strength metals, ordinary steel, and welds.

It has a slightly higher hardness than brown fused alumina, but lower toughness (more brittle), and excellent self-sharpening properties. It generates little heat during grinding, making it less likely to burn the workpiece.

A special process is used to uniformly coat the surface of white fused alumina with zirconium oxide, dextrin solution, and borosilicate glass powder, making the abrasive harder and significantly improving cutting and grinding efficiency and service life.

Zirconia possesses exceptional toughness and self-sharpening properties, making it ideal for manufacturing materials used in high-load, heavy-duty grinding applications.
Silicon carbide has extremely high brittleness and thermal conductivity, and is mainly used in stone and non-metallic materials.

Ceramic Grain is the highest quality abrasive. Ceramic Grain possesses extremely strong micro-fracture self-sharpening properties and an ultra-long service life, making it suitable for high-end customers.
Customized Private Label
If you are a brand owner/wholesaler, Dome can help you build your brand equity through comprehensive OEM brand promotion support.
You can send us your trademark, and we can print it. If you don’t have a trademark, we will design one according to your needs and finalize the layout with you. We offer three printing technologies for you to choose from: flexographic printing, offset printing, and screen printing.
Choose the correct granularity
A lower grit number means coarser, larger particles for faster material removal; a higher grit number means finer particles for smoother, more precise results.Dome offers a full range of grit sizes to help you find the right grinding wheel.
| Grit classification | Grit Range | Features | Applicable Scenarios |
| coarse grain | 16# — 36# | It has large abrasive grains, strong cutting force, fast chip removal, and is not prone to overheating. However, the surface is very rough. | Large cutting volume rough grinding, rough grinding, cleaning burrs from castings, peeling steel ingots, and large cutting discs |
| medium particle size | 46# — 60# | Balancing cutting efficiency with a certain level of surface finish, this is the most commonly used general-purpose particle size. | Ordinary surface grinder, external cylindrical grinder, tool grinder, steel cutting and grooving. |
| fine-grained | 80# — 120# | The abrasive grains are small, the cutting force is weak, the grinding heat is large, but the surface finish is high. | Semi-precision grinding, precision grinding, thin-walled parts machining, and tool sharpening. |
| Micron/Ultrafine | 150# – 240# and above | Extremely fine, relying mainly on micro-scraping, with extremely low surface roughness, making it very easy to burn the workpiece. | Ultra-precision grinding, mirror grinding, tool/cutting tool polishing, carbide precision grinding. |
How to Choose the Right Abrasive Wheel Dimensions
Abrasive wheel dimensions are specified as: outer diameter (D) × thickness (T) × bore diameter (H).
Dome offers a full range of abrasive wheel sizes. Choosing the correct grinding wheel size is crucial for hardware wholesalers. Different grinding wheel sizes have their own unique applications, and each country and region has its own preferred grinding wheel dimensions. Below. I will explain how to choose the right grinding wheel size.
Choose the Right Abrasive Wheel Outer Diameter
Dome abrasive wheels for metal have an outer diameter ranging from 38mm to 405mm.The outer diameter is mainly determined by the specifications of the angle grinder, and it is essential to ensure that the grinding wheel can be safely placed inside the angle grinder’s protective cover.
| outer diameter(mm) | outer diameter(inch) | Common Application Scenarios |
| 100 | 4 | Most Common Angle Grinder Specifications, General Purpose |
| 115 | 4.5 | Mainstream in the European and American Markets, Standard Equipment for Angle Grinders |
| 125 | 5 | Common in Europe, Suitable for Both Cutting and Grinding |
| 150 | 6 | Benchtop Grinding Machine, Professional Grinding |
| 180 | 7 | Large Angle Grinders, Heavy Industrial Cutting |
| 230 | 9 | Large Diameter Cutting, Construction/Steel Structures |
| 300 | 12 | Stationary Cutting Machines, Benchtop Grinding Machines |
| 350 | 14 | Professional Cutting Machines, Steel Processing Plants |
| 400 | 16 | Large Cutting Machines, Industrial Applications |
Abrasive Type Classic Outer Diameter Range

How to Choose the Right Abrasive Wheel Thickness
Dome abrasive wheels for metal have an thickness ranging from 0.5mm to 50mm
The thickness of the grinding wheel depends on the workpiece’s cutting width. The wheel thickness must be equal to or slightly greater than the target groove width or cutting surface. An excessively thick grinding wheel can easily cause machine tool vibration, leading to workpiece burn-in. However, a correspondingly thicker wheel will have a longer service life.
| Grinding Operation | Typical Thickness | Critical Property Required |
| Ultra-thin Cut-off) | 0.5mm – 1.2mm | High lateral stiffness |
| CNC Tool Fluting | 1.5mm – 6.0mm | Corner profile retention |
| Precision Surface | 10mm – 40mm | Precise dynamic balance |
| Heavy Snagging | 20mm – 75mm | High shock resistance |
| Centerless Thru-feed | 50mm – 150mm+ | Homogeneous structure |
Choose the Right Abrasive Wheel Bore Size
The ring needs to be precisely matched with the machine tool clips to ensure a tight fit.Dome provide global standard bore sizes (22.23mm, 25.4mm, 16mm) fully compliant with EN12413 safety requirements.
The perforated ring should not be too tight, otherwise the grinding wheel is prone to bursting from the center under high-speed rotation. The perforated ring should not be too loose, otherwise the grinding wheel will not be able to fully match the angle grinder, and the wheel may fly off.
