Your Customized OEM/ODM Aluminum Grinding Wheels Manufacturer

Aluminum and its alloys have a low melting point, excellent ductility and high viscosity. During high-speed friction, aluminum tends to melt and adhere to the abrasive grains. It causes the grinding wheels to clog. This loading can reduce the cut rate, increase friction, and raise the workpiece temperature.

Dome has developed a specially designed  type 27 grinding discs for aluminum. Dome aluminum grinding wheels use silicon carbide and aluminum oxide. Those abrasive grains make the wheels sharper, faster-cutting, and less prone to aluminum loading. Therefore, our products remove an average of 20%-30% more aluminum over their service life. The resin bond uses selected grinding aids, while the open wheel structure provides additional chip-clearance space. This design maintains self-sharpening properties while expelling molten aluminum chips. This makes products run at high speed without clogging.

Dome is an OEM manufacturer of grinding wheels for aluminum. We offer private-label depressed-center grinding wheels for aluminum to wholesalers. We have the most advanced automated production lines, ranging from 50-230mm, and can meet your large-volume needs for various grinding wheels foe aluminum models.

Aluminum Properties

Why is my Grinding Wheel Loading Up When Working with Aluminum

Wheel Loading
Wheel Loading

Aluminum is soft and adhesive, and grinding debris can easily enter the pores of the grinding wheel, causing it to become clogged and reducing the grinding force.

Excessive Heat
Excessive Heat

When the grinding wheel becomes clogged, heat cannot be dissipated; this not only shortens the service life of the grinding wheel but also causes thermal damage to the workpiece.

Surface Residue
Surface Residue

Some grinding wheels use wax or filler materials to prevent clogging; these are highly likely to leave residues on the surface of the aluminium, thereby affecting subsequent welding or painting operations.

Non-loading Grinding Wheel Formulation for Aluminum

Dome has developed a specialized abrasive formulation to reduce wheel loading and heat buildup when grinding aluminum. Aluminum grinding discs primarily use a combination of silicon carbide and aluminum oxide abrasive grains. Silicon carbide is hard and brittle, making it particularly suitable for grinding aluminium and other non-ferrous metals. It provides a high material removal rate; During working, the brittle silicon carbide grains continuously fracture to expose fresh, sharp cutting edges. This self-sharpening action helps maintain fast and consistent grinding performance. In combination, aluminum oxide improves aluminum deburring wheel stability and durability. It effectively extends the service life of the grinding discs for aluminum, thereby compensating for the rapid wear of silicon carbide.

How Dome Aluminum Grinding Discs Reduce Loading and Heat

Dome resin bonded grinding wheels for aluminum contain a variety of active fillers designed to reduce friction and control grinding temperatures. Such as cryolite (potassium fluoroaluminate, sodium fluoroaluminate), iron sulphide and potassium sulphate whiskers. Potassium fluoroaluminate melts at 580°C, effectively improving lubricity and reducing friction temperatures. This ultimately enables colder grinding and prevents clogging of the wheel. Iron sulphide produces a synergistic effect with other active fillers, enhancing the efficiency and service life of aluminum grinding wheels for angle grinder.

Open-Structure Design for Aluminum Grinding Discs

Dome grinding discs for aluminum feature an open-structure design. The abrasive grains are arranged more sparsely, providing greater porosity and more space for chip evacuation. This design allows for greater chip evacuation and accelerates the flow of cool air, thereby enhancing heat transfer within the grinding disc.

What are Aluminum Grinding Wheels Used for?

Dome aluminum grinding wheels are primarily used for grinding, dressing, and deburring aluminum and other soft non-ferrous metals. Applications include grinding weld seams and finishing aluminum surfaces and edges.

Differences Between Silicon Carbide and Zirconia Aluminum Grinding Discs

Silicon carbide is hard and brittle; it tends to fracture during grinding, creating new cutting edges. Silicon carbide aluminum grinding discs can quickly grind aluminum and other soft non-ferrous metals. Zirconia requires a certain amount of pressure for the abrasive particles to dislodge, making it more suitable for heavy-duty grinding.

What Grit Size of Grinding Wheels should be Used for Grinding Aluminum?

Since aluminum is prone to clogging and heat damage, it’s important to cut it cleanly and precisely. Therefore, I recommend choosing a finer grit. If you had to choose just one, I’d recommend P60 grit.

What are Safe Practices for Grinding Aluminum with Abrasive Wheels?

First, the maximum rotational speed of the aluminum grinding disc must exceed that of the angle grinder, and users must wear a protective guard when operating the angle grinder. Additionally, because grinding aluminum generates a significant amount of dust, open flames are strictly prohibited to avoid the risk of explosion.
